Damien Hirst - Confitebor Tibi

Damien Hirst's artwork, Confitebor Tibi, was created in 2010 in a limited edition of 50 signed and numbered originals.
The artwork belongs to Damien Hirst's Psalm print series. The composition of this series is inspired by his famous larger paintings with kaleidoscopic butterfly collages. Hirst began using butterflies as a medium in his work as early as 1989, describing the insect as a universal trigger. The Psalms are part of the 'Kaleidoscope' series, conceived by the artist in 2001 after discovering a Victorian tea tray decorated with intricate patterns of butterfly wings.

The vibrant butterfly wings create a circular psychedelic pattern. The color combination conveys calmness and radiates light. Hirst's spiritual symbolism reflected in the butterfly wings speaks of transcendental beauty and, within the given color combination, emphasizes the composition's title and invites contemplation.

Confitebor Tibi is a silkscreen print on paper embellished with diamond dust to enhance the already majestic artwork. The piece measures 74,1x71,6 cm and is signed and numbered by the artist.

The Psalm Series

In 2008, Hirst created a series of one hundred and fifty paintings called 'Psalm,' each named after an Old Testament psalm. As part of Hirst’s 'Kaleidoscope' series, these striking pieces touch on all religions and offer a variety of readings that range from the specific to the universal. The symbolism referenced in the 'Psalms' evokes both spirituality and the butterfly’s natural metamorphosis. They allude to both Christian iconography and stained glass church windows while also seeming to possess the meditative abstract patterns of Hindu and Buddhist mandalas.

Hirst attributes his long-term fascination with butterflies to their universal appeal, once stating:

“I think rather than be personal you have to find universal triggers: everyone’s frightened of glass, everyone’s frightened of sharks, everyone loves butterflies.”

The patterns of wings can’t help but celebrate the aesthetic and lyrical splendor of life.

As with much of Hirst’s work, the ‘Psalms’ also have a darker, more complex meaning. Deceptively hopeful and bright, these paintings hover between life and death. Although undeniably dazzling manifestations of the natural world, each also constitutes a somber memento mori. Hirst thus raises the question of whether his chosen imagery should be considered to represent that which is beautiful, poignant and uplifting or perhaps merely acts as a reminder that all existence, while it may be beautiful, is ultimately fleeting and fragile.
