Ambroise Vollard was one of the most famous art dealers at the turn of 19th and 20th century. It was one of the first promoter of the Impressionists. In 1900 he began his activity as a publisher of books and prints portfolio.
He usually commissioned to his artists illustration such classics of literature and famous texts. With Pablo Picasso, instead, published a work, known as the Vollard Suite, not based on a particular text. It consists of 100 subjects, 73 of which can be divided into five categories:
- The Battle of Love
- Rembrandt
- Minotaur
- The Sculptor's Studio
- Portraits of Vollard
The artworks don't fit into these categories are considered "free prints".
