THE ARTWORK

-

Basquiat's "God the Monkey" looks at us with blank eyes without yellow pupils and a disquieting smile. The red background brings out even more the threatening personality of this God.

Basquiat's pop art is very different from the sparkling and colorful Warhol stars, it comes from the street and the dirty alleys of the Bronx, embraces the African-American cause and has a strong claim. The style is characterized by bright colors and violent colors, combined with a scathing sign derived from tribal graffiti. The art market took possession of Basquiat's works without understanding them and trying to stem their deeply subversive sense. It was this complete misunderstanding that probably caused a further crisis in the already fragile personalities of Basquiat, who died at only 27 years of age killed by a lethal cocktail of drugs.

The work was printed for the inauguration of the exhibition "Jean Michel Basquiat - Bilder, 1984-1986" at the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzburg, Austria, July-August 1986.
