Andy Warhol - Self-Portrait

Andy Warhol's lithograph Self-Portrait is hand-signed and dates from 1978.

The artwork depicts Warhol's face three times, in three different overlapping positions to the extent that it is difficult to distinguish the three entire faces. The artist's neck, shoulders and bust have been excluded from the portrait, the focus being on the face, expression and hair. Warhol stares directly at the viewer with an intense gaze.

Andy Warhol stated: 'I paint images of myself to remind myself that I am still around'. Made between 1964 and 1987, Warhol's numerous self-portraits trace the Pop artist's rise from self-conscious emerging talent to celebrity-obsessed star, to elderly man tormented by the possibility of death.

Made for the 1982 exhibition 'Andy Warhol: Celebrity Portraits' at 'I, A Private Club' in Hong Kong, Self-Portrait measures 22x21 cm.
