THE ARTWORK

Andy Warhol, Flowers – II.117, 1974

The subject of Flowers – II.117 is represented by an isolated hibiscus flower, placed at the center of the composition and defined by a marked graphic line. The flower, characterized by an intense pink filling, emerges from an essential vase outlined with rapid and overlapping black marks. A wide curvilinear gesture, also in pink tones, crosses the surrounding space, introducing a dynamic element that dialogues with the vertical structure of the vase.

The work is a hand-colored screenprint with Dr. Martin's aniline watercolor dyes on paper, created in an edition of 250 copies (205/250). It is signed in pencil on the verso and bears initials in pencil at the bottom right. The dimensions (103.8 × 69.2 cm) give the image significant presence, while the manual intervention with aniline dyes intensifies chromatic brilliance and makes each copy slightly different, while maintaining the serial structure.

As in the other works of the Flowers series, Warhol reworked a photographic image published in 1964 in the magazine "Modern Photography", translating it into the language of screenprinting. With this series, presented for the first time in 1964 at the Leo Castelli gallery in New York, the artist temporarily moves away from portraits of media icons to focus on a natural subject, while maintaining unchanged the principles of repetition and formal reduction.

In this 1974 version, the use of aniline dyes accentuates the gestural and experimental component of the work. The contrast between the incisive black mark and the fluid chromatic application highlights the tension between mechanical procedure and the artist's direct intervention, a central theme in Warhol's reflection on authorship and the reproducibility of the image.
