Banksy: Street Art and Critique of Capitalism

The critique of capitalism and consumerism is one of the most relevant themes of Banksy’s art and it constitutes the fundament of this work.

With the typical irony of Banksy, artist who never fails to provoke the viewer, the work transforms an oath of allegiance to the nation into an apologia for capitalism and its laws. The plastic bag raised in place of the flag bears the mark of one of the most important British multinationals, this way criticized by Banksy. Tesco is in fact a multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer, one of the largest groups of U.K. and Europe.

This is not the first time the street artist Banksy has quoted Tesco:

In 2005 he made the Soup Can screen printing, a citation to Andy Warhol's iconic cans, but under the Tesco brand instead of Campbell;

In 2011 he created the Tesco Petrol Bomb screen printing for the riots happened in the hometown of Banksy (Bristol) that took place right near a Tesco market, damaging it.

Through these works Banksy denounces the pervasiveness of Tesco markets in almost every street in England, hymns to consumerism a front of problems such as poverty and social inequality.

With Very Little Helps, Banksy refers to how in the capitalist production model companies have grown to the point of becoming so powerful that they can almost be considered nations, new flags to swear allegiance to and submit to.

Banksy: Graffiti Works and Studio Works

Very Little Helps was created in 2008 as a mural on the side of a pharmacy building on London's Essex Road.

The work has been the subject of dispute and controversy and was vandalized by rival street artist King Robbo who damaged the Tesco flag by covering it with his tag.

In the same year of this mural by Banksy, the artist reproduced the work in a limited edition screenprint print of 299 pieces signed in original. The image of the screenprint is mirrored compared to the original mural.
