Artwork by Banksy – Toxic Mary Analysis

Read more about Banksy Toxic Mary Analysis.

In Toxic Mary Banksy illustrates the traditional subject of the Madonna and Child, in which the Virgin Mary breast-feeds the Little Jesus Christ.

The structure of the two figures takes inspiration from Renaissance paintings.

Banksy breaks with the traditional composition by inserting in the mother’s hand a feeding bottle bearing the label of a toxic product.

In the Toxic Mary Artwork, Banksy changes his usual colors, thus creating one of his most shady artworks.

The dark undertones are highlighted by the yellow toxic bottle and the color stripes make it look like the scene is melting.

In this work Banksy abandons his distinctive humour and his sharp irony, evoking a sense of pessimism and despair.

Banksy - Toxic Mary Meaning

What is Banksy Toxic Mary Meaning?

A lot of people have been offended by the Banksy’s Toxic Mary Artwork, especially Christians.

The Banksy’s criticism of religion is explicit and direct: Mary giving poison to the God’s Son is the representation of a toxic religion.

At the same time, however, the work could hint to a less blasphemous and more general criticism.

In this case, toxicity does not only refer to religion but rather to family relationships.

Parents often pass on and impose convictions and beliefs that their children accept without spirit of criticism.
