Banksy - Love is in the Air

The artwork by Banksy, Love is in the Air is a screen print made in a limited edition of 500 pieces in 2003.

The artwork depicts one of the most important and well-known subjects of the street artist Banksy on a red background. Immediately recognisable and an embodiment of the artist's graphic style, the protagonist adopts a pose typical of images of civic disorder while intent on throwing a brick or a bomb at an unknown enemy. However, Banksy decides to replace the weapon with a bouquet of flowers, thus disarming the young agitator and creating an image with a double meaning: a call for change and an exhortation to peace.

Banksy is appreciated for the ironic humour of his works as well as for his political comments that urge the viewer to question current situations. The artwork was chosen by the artist himself to be used as the cover image in his 2005 monograph entitled Wall and Piece.

Love is in the Air is numbered and measures 50x70 cm.

Love is in the Air - Banksy Meaning

Through the artwork Love is in the Air, Banksy wants to remind us of the injustice and inequality that exists around each one of us and offers a simple message of hope. Similarly, Banksy uses the bouquet of flowers to create an image of unarmed violence, interrupting the crude image of a young militant caught in an act of violence by replacing his molotov cocktail with a symbol of peace.

Banksy is aware of his role as a social commentator and satirist and therefore uses the power of familiar symbols juxtaposed with incompatible references to create absurd and provocative images that convey powerful political messages. Its ironic tone is reflected in the fact that the work shares its title with a John Paul Young song from 1978. While humorously incongruous with the work's subject matter, this double entendre gives the painting a sense of vitality, anticipating the moment when flowers, the symbol of love, are thrown forward by the subject.

"If you want to say something and make people listen, you have to wear a mask." - Banksy

The first appearance of Love is in the Air

The first appearance of the Banksy artwork, Love is in the Air, dates back to 2003 when the artist created the subject on the Beit Sahour, near the Israeli West Bank Barrier, which extends over 700 km and separates Israel from the West Bank. The work testifies the ability of Banksy to use urban environments and public architecture in a way that succeeds in enhancing his message, giving his images immediacy for all those who live in or visit the place.

Erected in 2002, the wall has often been used by Banksy as the canvas for numerous murals. Like much of Banksy's work, these works highlight what the artist sees as social and political injustice and the damage caused by global issues such as terrorism and military oppression.

Banksy's continued activity in the region demonstrates his ongoing commitment to drawing attention to the militarism and division caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
