Banksy - Get Out While You Can - Unsigned

The screenprint on paper by Banksy, Get Out While You Can depicts a rat holding up a placard bearing the work’s title.

The work is part of the series by Banksy Placard Rat, a trilogy in which the protagonist of each work is a rat holding a placard with different writings on it. The mouse, one of Banksy's iconic subjects, thus becomes an emblem of street art itself and of the messages it wants to launch.

The work was created in 2004 in a limited edition of 175 numbered and unsigned pieces. It measures 50x35 cm and is provided with the certificate of authenticity issued by Pest Control that guarantees its originality. The available piece is number 52/175.

Banksy: Rat - Art

The rat is an iconic animal in Banksy's works. He chooses it as a symbol of street art itself: it moves at night, without being seen, it populates the streets and cities and, although opposed by the population, it resists and does not give up.

In addition, the rat brings with it a pun that is typical of the irony of Banksy. Rat - Art are in fact composed of the same letters, as if to suggest an identification between the two words.

The rat is also a reference to one of the greatest masters of street art and a point of reference for Banksy: Blek Le Rat. French street artist, he is recognized as the father of the stencil technique and has inspired many generations of street artists.

The series by Banksy Placard Rat

Get Out While You Can is part of the series of three works by Banksy Placard Rat, made in 2004. The other two works similarly show a rat holding up a placard, but in these the placard says "Welcome To Hell" and "Because I'm Worthless." The inspiration for the series comes from George Marshall's "Get Out While You Can - Escape the Rat Race”.

Although the screenprint was made in 2004, similar works appeared between 2000 and 2005 on the streets of London, Liverpool and New York. During these years Banksy elaborated the image of the rat as a metaphor for street art, leading to the screenprint editions.

Get Out While You Can is part of a limited edition of 250 pieces in total. All works are numbered, but 75 are signed in original and 175 are unsigned.
