Banksy - Flower Thrower - Triptych - Signed screenprint

Screenprint on paper by Banksy, Flower Thrower is a triptych version of the well-known masked man throwing a bouquet of flowers, one of the artist's most famous subjects. With this work, also known as Love Is in the Air, Banksy criticizes war and violence by distorting the image of a protester who would otherwise appear to be throwing a Molotov cocktail. Placing a bunch of flowers in the thrower’s hand, the twist is inevitable: despite the obvious anger and aggression in his posture, the man is now preparing to throw a universal symbol of love and peace.

This subject is a perfect example of both the artist's style and poetics. Banksy's strength lies in dealing with sensitive issues with irony, but at the same time with political and social commitment.

This edition of Love Is in the Air was made and distributed for the Gross Domestic Product, the shop set up in 2019 in Croydon (south of London). For the occasion, the street artist had displayed several of his works and merchandising items in the front windows, but without allowing access to the public. The only way to buy was through a dedicated website where you had to answer the question "What does art represent for you?". A drawing was then held, and the winner was awarded the work, paying a symbolic amount compared to the market value.

Flower Thrower was created in 2019 and measures in total 108x211 cm (84x65, 108x78 and 46x56 the individual pieces). The work is signed in original and is in a limited edition of 300 pieces. It is also provided with the original frame in which the work was exhibited at Gross Domestic Product, which significantly increases its value.

Flower Thrower: Banksy and Palestine

Love Is In The Air (LIITA), first appeared in 2003 as a large format stencilled graffiti in Jerusalem shortly after the construction of the West Bank Wall. The graffiti was made on the 760km wall that separates the Palestine from Israel.

Spanning 760km, the wall, as Banksy put it, “essentially turns Palestine into the world’s largest open prison”. This led the street artist to take an active stand to raise awareness of the issue, and in 2005 he returned to the region to paint a series of nine provocative works in support of freedom and equality. In 2015, he intervened again, creating four new works among the ruins of a bombed city with the intention of highlighting the plight of people living in the Gaza Strip.
