Andy Warhol - Vesuvius II.365 - Signed Screenprint

Limited edition screenprint by Andy Warhol, Vesuvius II.365 is among Warhol's most iconic works from the 1980s and depicts the volcano Vesuvius during an eruption. With the bright colors typical of Pop Art, this work is charged with energy and shows the volcano in its destructive power.

In this version, the volcano and the silhouettes of the smoke are in red, while the sky is characterized by gray and earthy colors.

In Vesuvius Warhol draw inspiration from Neapolitan Vedutism and landscape paintings to create works in full Pop Art style, but in dialogue with the tradition. In these works by Andy Warhol, Vesuvius and the surrounding landscape become an expression of the destructive power of nature, key topic in the artist’s production, already approached in "Fate presto", the initiative of the Neapolitan gallery owner Lucio Amelio for the earthquake in Irpinia in 1980.

Andy Warhol created Fate Presto, a blow-up of the first page of the newspaper Il Mattino published the day after the catastrophe. With Fate Presto Andy Warhol pays homage to Italy and to the victims of the tragic event and Lucio Amelio chose the work as the manifesto of the entire project.

And with Vesuvius by Andy Warhol, volcano and destructive power are identified in a suggestive representation of nature and its superiority over man.

Vesuvius II.365 belongs to a limited edition of 250 numbered and signed pieces. It measures 80x100 cm and was made in 1985.

The work is published in the catalogue F. Feldman, J. Schellmann, "Andy Warhol Prints. A Catalogue Raisonné 1963-1987", 4th Edition at page 150.

Vesuvius: Andy Warhol and the city of Naples

Before the screenprint Vesuvius, Andy Warhol had made 18 canvases, 17 of which were exhibited at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples in 1985, dedicated to Vesuvius.

Andy Warhol's volcano is the result of his collaboration with the art dealer Lucio Amelio. The two met in 1974 in New York, when Warhol made four portraits of Lucio Amelio. Andy Warhol visited Naples for the first time the following year at Lucio Amelio's invitation and stayed in the city for three days.

For Warhol Naples was the Italian version of New York and his statement is well known: “I love Naples because it reminds me of New York, especially for the many transvestites and garbage on the street. How New York is a city that is falling apart, and people are happy in spite of everything.”
