THE ARTWORK

-

Takashi Murakami says about this work: "Dob is a self-portrait of the Japanese people. He is cute but has no meaning and understands nothing of life, sex or reality".

The main character in the Superflat art piece is Mr. Dob, who was created under the philosophy of kawaii aesthetic, thus carrying the characteristics of "cute" and "lovely". Its name derives from the abbreviation of a Japnaese phrase "dobojite" which means "why is it?". For the artist Mr. Dob is a metaphor of the postmodern Japanese people who have not overcomed the anxiety and trauma of Japna's defeat in the Second World War. This unreadiness, added to the subsequent US occupation, resulted in a childish society.

In this artwork there are four faces of Mr. Dob, with many eyes and sharp teeth.
