Pablo Picasso - 347 Series n. 331

347 Series n. 331 is a work by Pablo Picasso created in 1968 and belonging to the celebrated series of engravings known as the "347 Series". Executed in an advanced phase of the artist's career, the series testifies to Picasso's continuous ability to rework themes, images and references belonging both to his own experience and to art history.

In this work, Picasso constructs the scene through a subtle and precise linear mark. At the center of the composition dominates a monumental female nude figure in relation to the other characters, while on the left appears a male figure in elaborate clothing and with a strongly characterized headdress. On the right edge, decorative elements and more complex figurative fragments emerge instead, which accentuate the contrast between the simplicity of the bodies and the graphic richness of certain details.

The composition shows one of the most recognizable aspects of Picasso's late production: the freedom with which the artist combines human figure, eroticism, costume and references to figurative tradition. The female body, a recurring subject throughout his career, is not represented according to naturalistic criteria, but through simplified forms and deformations that emphasize its presence within the scene.

Particular attention is also given to the relationship between the characters. The different scale of the figures and the direction of their gazes create an immediate visual relationship, while the engraving mark allows Picasso to alternate broad surfaces left almost empty with areas dense with lines and decorations. This juxtaposition makes the scene dynamic while maintaining an essential construction.

The work thus reflects the continuous process of experimentation that characterized Picasso's entire career. If in previous phases of his research the artist had gone through the Blue Period, the Rose Period, Cubism and the subsequent return to more classical forms, in the last years of his production these different references are taken up with great freedom, without adhering to a single stylistic language.

347 Series n. 331 is an etching on paper from 1968, measuring 20.8 x 26.8 cm, with sheet 33 x 40.4 cm, and is signed in the original by the artist. The work belongs to a limited edition of 50 copies and is catalogued with the references Bloch B.1811 / Geiser G.1828.B.b.1.
