Joan Miró - Cahier d’Ombres

The work belongs to the Cahier d’Ombres series, created by Joan Miró in 1971, during a mature phase of his career. In these years, the artist developed an increasingly essential visual language, based on the power of the mark, gestural freedom, and the use of a limited number of intense colours, elements that became central to his graphic production.

The composition is dominated by a large, curved black mark that crosses the sheet and structures the entire image. Around this main form are arranged finer elements, vertical lines, and small areas of red, green, yellow, and blue, distributed in such a way as to create a dynamic balance between filled and empty spaces.

As often happens in Miró’s works, the marks seem to suggest organic forms, figures, antennae, or animated presences, without ever being precisely defined. This ambiguity is a fundamental aspect of his language: the artist does not describe reality directly, but transforms it into a system of symbols and forms that leave interpretation open.

The background, rich in splashes, stains, and scattered marks, enhances the spontaneous character of the composition and creates a strong contrast with the more solid black forms. Lithography allows Miró to preserve the vitality of the gesture and the material quality of the mark, giving the work an immediate and highly expressive appearance.

This research fits fully within the artist’s broader development, as throughout his career he progressively abandoned every form of conventional representation in order to build a personal visual vocabulary. In the works of the 1970s, this synthesis reached a particular intensity: just a few graphic elements are enough to generate movement, tension, and rhythm.

The work is a lithograph on paper from 1971, measuring 30 x 23.5 cm at full sheet, and belongs to a limited edition of 200 copies. It is catalogued under the references M.743-745 / Cramer Books 143 and is part of the Cahier d’Ombres series.
