Joan Miró - Cahier d’Ombres

The work belongs to the Cahier d’Ombres series, created by Joan Miró in 1971, during a mature phase of his career, when his visual language had reached an extreme synthesis of mark, colour, and gesture. In these years, Miró continued to develop an artistic research free from any naturalistic constraints, relying on essential forms and an immediate use of graphic material.

The composition is built through broad black marks, drawn with great energy, which occupy the central part of the sheet and intertwine with finer, more linear forms. Alongside the black, a few distinct colours emerge – blue, yellow, green, and red – arranged in isolated areas that break up the monochrome background and introduce a dynamic visual rhythm.

As often happens in Miró’s work, the forms seem to oscillate between abstraction and figuration. Some marks may evoke bodies, animals, or organic presences, but they are never defined in a single, unambiguous way. The artist leaves viewers free to recognise associations and images, keeping the meaning of the composition open.

The background, characterised by splashes, stains, and scattered traces, clearly reveals the role of gesture in the creative process. Lithography thus becomes a particularly suitable medium for Miró’s poetics, as it allows him to preserve the spontaneity of the line and the variations in texture, key elements in his graphic production of the 1970s.

The work fully reflects the artist’s desire to move beyond conventional painting, a theme that accompanied much of his career. In his mature works, Miró progressively reduces forms, removes every superfluous element, and focuses the image on a few essential marks capable of creating balance, tension, and movement.

The work is a lithograph on paper from 1971, measuring 30 x 23.5 cm at full sheet, and belongs to a limited edition of 200 copies. It is catalogued under the references M.743-745 / Cramer Books 143 and is part of the Cahier d’Ombres series.
