Reality: Optional. Miaz Brothers con i Maestri del XX Secolo

The Exhibition

Reality: Optional. Miaz Brothers with the Masters of the 20th Century is an exhibition project developed at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Rome (GAM), open to the public from February 24 to May 26, 2024, and included in the cultural program celebrating the centenary of the museum’s founding (1925–2025).

The project stems from a dialogue between the artistic language of the Miaz Brothers and a selection of masterpieces from the Capitoline collection, creating a network of relationships between works, references, and interpretations. Through approximately sixty works, the exhibition explores the mechanisms of perceiving reality and the relationship between what is visible and what is imagined.

The Miaz Brothers and the Theme of Post-Truth

Miaz Brothers, Roberto (1965) and Renato (1968), develop a practice centered on the construction of the image and its ambiguity. Their figures, blurred yet recognizable, challenge the idea of a stable reality, opening up a reading in which meaning is not given but constructed through the viewer’s gaze.

Within this context, the project addresses the theme of “post-truth,” understood as the predominance of subjective perception over objective facts. The image thus becomes an open space in which reality and interpretation overlap.

Dialogue with the Masters of the 20th Century

The exhibition is structured into sections that connect the work of the Miaz Brothers with that of 20th-century artists — including Giacomo Balla, Carlo Levi, Mario Sironi, and Giorgio Morandi — activating a dialogue between languages, eras, and modes of representation.

A central element of the project is the active role of the viewer, invited to complete the image through personal interpretation. The works do not convey a single, univocal truth but instead construct an open field of possibilities, in a continuous exchange between artist and audience.

The exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale – Department of Culture and the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with Wunderkammern.

Organized by Zètema Progetto Cultura and Wunderkammern.

Curated by Claudio Crescentini and Wunderkammern.
