From July 16 to August 23, 2026, Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome presents Caravaggio Forever, the first exhibition by Marco Tamburro dedicated to the cycle of works inspired by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
Over forty works by the artist, an immersive journey, and a selection of documents dedicated to Caravaggio bring to life an exhibition that creates a dialogue between contemporary painting and one of the greatest revolutionaries in the history of art.
Contemporary painting meets classicism and reinterprets, from a present-day perspective, the master who forever changed the way reality is represented. Two eras, two languages, one single urgency: to give form to the truth of mankind.
From this dialogue comes Caravaggio Forever, the project with which Marco Tamburro pays tribute to the genius of Caravaggio through a deeply contemporary artistic research.
A dialogue between contemporary painting and classicism
Curated by Giulia Silvia Ghia, the exhibition begins with a simple question: what does it mean today to look at the world with the same courage with which Caravaggio changed painting more than four centuries ago?
Marco Tamburro’s answer does not come through quotation or imitation. His works do not reproduce the master’s paintings, but share his gaze: direct, intense, capable of portraying reality without idealising it, restoring its tensions, fragility, and humanity.
Just as Caravaggio transformed the men and women of his time into the protagonists of painting, Tamburro portrays contemporary man. His canvases speak of cities, suburbs, anxieties, relationships, fragility, and hopes. An essential and powerful language that, through strong contrasts, light, shadow, and great narrative force, invites viewers to observe the present with new eyes.
More than a comparison between two artists separated by four centuries, the exhibition proposes a dialogue between two ways of observing the world, united by the need to make visible what normally remains hidden.
Rome, a meeting point between past and present
Rome represents the natural meeting point of this journey. It is the city where Caravaggio revolutionised the history of painting, and it is the city where Marco Tamburro lives and develops his artistic research.
Here, past and present meet, demonstrating how art continues to speak to every generation.
An immersive exhibition journey
The exhibition journey guides visitors through over forty works that create a narrative and immersive experience.
The exhibition is accompanied by a documentary by Giovanni Storaro, dedicated to the figure and artistic path of Marco Tamburro. In addition, enriching the narrative is a selection of documents dedicated to the life of Caravaggio and to the commissions that accompanied his artistic activity.
These documents recount not only the human story of Merisi, but also the system of relationships, commissions, and patronage that made his artistic revolution possible. This focus offers visitors a historical key to interpretation, capable of completing and deepening the dialogue between the seventeenth-century master and the contemporary research of Marco Tamburro.
Painting and history thus intertwine in an experience that goes beyond the traditional museum visit and invites the public to reflect on the power of art to transcend time.
