Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the rubik's cube with Mr. Brainwash at deodato arte

In 2020, Mr. Brainwash created his “Rubik’s” series, combining classical art subjects and one of the most recognizable objects in the world. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube, let’s revisit an iconic artist putting his spin on the classic toy.

The “Rubik’s” series consisted of six classical sculptures with the Rubik’s Cube adding a playful, colorful new life to the white sculptures. The inspiration for the project came from the Rubik’s Cube becoming a worldwide phenomenon during Mr. Brainwash’s childhood years. The topics of pop and mass culture have been central to Mr. Brainwash’s art, but with the “Rubik’s” series he contrasts the past and present in a way that intrigues the viewer.

Mr. Brainwash released the “Rubik’s” series in a limited run of 50 prints, along with 5 printer’s proofs. All prints are 41x41cm (16x16in) and hand-signed and numbered, with a thumbprint on the reverse.

CLASSICAL SUBJECTS OF RUBIK’S SERIES

The six images are a reimagining of their initial subjects. For example, “Rubik’s Atlas” is based on the Farnese Atlas, “Rubik’s David” is based on David by Michelangelo, “Rubik’s Discobolus” is based on the Discobolus, ”Rubik’s Thinker” is based on The Thinker by Auguste Rodin, “Rubik’s Venus” is based on Venus de Milo, and “Rubik’s Victory” is based on the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

RUBIK’S SERIES UNIQUE WORKS

Mr. Brainwash also released multiple unique works on mixed media. These 1/1s are the same size as the regular prints but boast vibrant collaged backgrounds and have unique hand drawings and numberings on the back.

One of these unique works, “Rubik’s Venus”, is pictured above and available for purchase on our website. This work is inspired by Venus de Milo and has a multimedia background that shows pop culture icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Campbell’s soup as a spray can, two subjects made popular by Andy Warhol.
