Anarchia Pop: Mr. Brainwash Brings Contemporary Art to Alessandro Borghese’s Restaurant

In Milan, contemporary art and fine dining come together in an unprecedented exhibition project. “Anarchia Pop”, the exhibition dedicated to Mr. Brainwash, inaugurates “Distrazioni d’Autore”, the new exhibition series curated by Deodato Arte at AB – Il lusso della semplicità.

The relationship between Alessandro Borghese and Mr. Brainwash began in 2019, on the occasion of the artist’s first exhibition in Italy. Over time, that encounter developed into a creative and personal connection, rooted in a shared attitude: not taking rules too seriously and using their own language to reinterpret contemporary imagery.

Today, that connection takes shape once again in an exhibition project that brings Mr. Brainwash’s works into Alessandro Borghese’s Milanese restaurant, located at Viale Belisario 3.

“Distrazioni d’Autore”: When a Restaurant Becomes an Exhibition Space

Alessandro Borghese’s restaurant has always welcomed contemporary art as part of its identity. With “Distrazioni d’Autore”, however, this relationship takes the form of a fully developed exhibition project for the first time.

Curated by Deodato Arte, the series opens with Anarchia Pop, a selection of works by Mr. Brainwash conceived to interact with the restaurant’s interiors and character.

This is not a traditional exhibition space adapted to a restaurant setting, but rather an everyday environment reinterpreted through art. The works are not gathered in a separate room or presented according to a conventional museum route: instead, they are distributed throughout the venue, creating a direct dialogue with its architecture and identity.

This is precisely what makes Anarchia Pop distinctive: art enters a place designed for an entirely different experience and temporarily changes the way that space is perceived.

Mr. Brainwash and “Pop Anarchy”

The exhibition title refers to one of the central elements of Mr. Brainwash’s practice: his ability to appropriate images, symbols and references from popular culture and transform them through an immediate, ironic and recognisable visual language.

His works bring together Street Art, Pop Art and mass culture, combining iconic imagery, slogans, cinematic references and characters that have become part of the collective imagination.

It is a language that does not seek to go unnoticed. Colours, contrasts, quotations and messages coexist on the surface of the works, creating a deliberately direct aesthetic capable of engaging a broad audience without giving up the layers of meaning behind its references.

The selection presented in Anarchia Pop includes silkscreens, works on canvas and sculptural objects, including L’Ambiance, Vespa, Everyday Life, Einstein, I Love Italy, You Look Beautiful and With All My Love, alongside the iconic spray cans and Life is Beautiful sculptures.

Two Languages, the Same Attitude

The connection between Mr. Brainwash and Alessandro Borghese is not merely aesthetic.

They work in profoundly different fields, yet share an approach characterised by energy, irony and creative freedom. It is this affinity that, years after their first encounter, has made possible a project that goes beyond the simple display of artworks.

Mr. Brainwash brings his imagery of pop culture, Street Art and contemporary icons into the restaurant. The spaces of AB – Il lusso della semplicità thus become the setting in which this language can be viewed from a different perspective, far from the usual environments of a gallery or art fair.

The result is an encounter between worlds that do not need to resemble one another in order to enter into dialogue.

An Art Experience Beyond Traditional Exhibition Spaces

With Anarchia Pop, Deodato Arte continues to explore the possibility of encountering contemporary art beyond its most conventional settings.

An exhibition inside a restaurant changes the way artworks are perceived: they are not the sole reason for a visit, but become part of the environment, atmosphere and overall experience.

This exhibition format allows art to become part of everyday life and reach different audiences while maintaining its own identity.

Anarchia Pop is therefore more than a simple exhibition of Mr. Brainwash’s work: it is the first chapter of “Distrazioni d’Autore”, a project built around the idea of creating new points of contact between contemporary art and places that are not normally perceived as exhibition spaces.

The exhibition is accessible exclusively to guests of AB – Il lusso della semplicità, making the encounter with the artworks an integral part of the restaurant experience.
