Omaggio al moderno e al contemporaneo

Omaggio al moderno e al contemporaneo by Angelo Accardi, oil on canvas, unique work, portrays Jean-Michel Basquiat seated at the centre of a saturated blue living room crowded with masterpieces from art history placed side by side without hierarchy, from a cubist fragment to a Renaissance Madonna, from an impressionist landscape to a classical bust, while two ostriches stand guard on either side of the room.

The composition follows the scenographic structure typical of the artist: a bourgeois interior with a checkerboard floor and a hanging chandelier, made vivid by the intense blue of the walls and by black and white drips and splashes running across the whole surface, like traces of a painterly gesture still in progress. The hanging paintings, recognisable by style and period, build a compressed fresco of art history, while the figure of Basquiat, seated in the pose known from famous photographs, becomes the human focal point of this visual accumulation.

The presence of the ostriches, recurring animals in Accardi's repertoire, introduces a disorienting element within the domestic and cultured scene, heightening the contrast between the apparent order of the furnishings and the irruption of a foreign, surreal detail. The oil technique renders with precision both the polished surfaces of the setting and the dense texture of the drips, which seem to overlay the depicted scene as an independent second layer of paint.

Like the other works in the series dedicated to Bernini, Bacon, Hockney and Botticelli, this painting condenses different eras and languages within a single pictorial space, here chosen to connect the oldest painting tradition with a protagonist of twentieth-century art, continuing the artist's research into the accumulation and coexistence of heterogeneous images within the same picture.
