Omaggio a Botticelli

Omaggio a Botticelli by Angelo Accardi, oil on canvas, unique work, places three large blue and white ostriches and a yellow Minion inside a period salon where Botticelli's Primavera hangs alongside a seventeenth-century portrait.

The scene is built on a sharp contrast between the museum-like setting, with dark walls, gilded frames, purple curtains and a ceiling painted like a starry sky, and the foreign elements populating it: the ostriches with ruffled plumage, the Minion in blue overalls standing still at the center of the room, a striped colorful painting glimpsed through a doorway. The checkered floor dissolves in the foreground into a pool of turquoise water, while splashes of white, black and blue paint dot the entire surface like a rain uniting the image's different registers.

The oil painting technique allows Accardi to render with illusionistic care both the copy of the Renaissance masterpiece and the texture of the animals' plumage, while the dripping splashes remain deliberately in tension with the realistic rendering of the settings, signaling the artist's hand intervening over the constructed scene.

The juxtaposition of an icon of classical painting with figures foreign to its time and register, exotic animals and a contemporary animated character, places the work within a vein of ironic reworking of classical imagery through disorienting insertions, here carried out with particular attention to the layering of spaces and pictorial materials.
