Andy Warhol
GERTRUDE STEIN II.27
Postcard signed in original, Gertrude Stein II.227 is one of ten subjects that make up the portfolio created in 1980 by Andy Warhol, “Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century”. It was Warhol's first collaboration with gallery owner Robert Feldman, with whom he continued to work throughout the 1980s. The series of “Jewish Geniuses” (this is how Warhol referred to the project) featured portraits of a selection of “notable” Jews: Warhol retrieved archival images and reworked them in his signature Pop Art style and aesthetic. The series was first exhibited at the Jewish Museum in 1980. The work is an invitation card: these are the postcards that the artist sent to friends and acquaintances as invitations to his exhibitions, signing them in the original. The portfolio of numbered and signed silkscreens from which this postcard is taken is published in the catalog raisonné F. Feldman, J. Schellmann, "Andy Warhol Prints. A Catalogue Raisonné 1963-1987," 4th Edition on pp. 112/113.
