Irony and criticism: Banksy - A Visual Protest (Roma)

Banksy - A Visual Protest is the name of the Roman exhibition that with works realized between 2001 and 2017 will touch all the main themes of the artist. Irony and sarcasm, denunciation and protest will take shape in a path that will include Banksy's main masterpieces, works from Love is in the Air to Girl with Balloon, from Queen Vic to Napalm, from Toxic Mary to HMV, from the Barely Legal portfolio to record projects for vinyl covers and CDs.

The art gallery Deodato Arte is the Italian leader in the management and promotion of street art and the major exponents of the movement, including Banksy. Many of the masterpieces on display at the Banksy exhibition in Rome come from the Deodato Arte collection or from the private collections of our collectors and we are pleased to have contributed in this way to make this initiative possible.

Most of the most famous works by the street artist are exhibited at the Chiostro del Bramante. Banksy thus returns to the public's attention, confronting them with sharp criticism of the most controversial traits of modern society.

Banksy: Chiostro del Bramante meets Street Art

Designed in 1500 by Donato Bramante, the cloister is an exclusive and unique location. Ancient and modern inevitably enter into dialogue in this special comparison with the works by Banksy. Chiostro del Bramante and Street Art meet in this exhibition and the provocative works of the street artist dialogue with the cycle of frescoes by Raffaello Sibille e Angeli (1515).

A winning move, that of the dialogue between ancient and modern, which has repeatedly shown how it can open new horizons and perspectives providing unexpected insights.

Who is Banksy? Works and style of the street artist

Although we still don't know who Banksy is, his iconic works are now a landmark in the history of street art and in the mass culture. Over the years the artist has been associated with different individuals, but the only certain fact is Banksy's provenance: Bristol.

Among the main hypotheses:

  • Robert del Naja, frontman of the British band Massive Attack;
  • Robin Cunningham, street artist from Bristol;
  • Mr. Brainwash, street artist of French origin, among the most quoted of the moment.

Banksy's favorite technique is the stencil, a sheet from which sections are cut out allowing only the cut out parts to be colored with the utmost precision. If the artist uses this technique for urban interventions and graffiti, however, he does not fail to create studio works in limited edition silkscreen prints. His most iconic subjects are thus able to reach the viewer otherwise unable to admire the original urban interventions.

A sharp and strong social criticism is the basis of Banksy's artistic research. Works such as Napalm, Golf Sale and Bomb Hugger are satirical critics of war and its absurdity, while in Morons and Sale Ends Today criticism of consumerism and capitalist production model prevails.
