The Tauromachy in the art of José Molina

In the four works offered by Deodato Arte Gallery the message is clear and the aim is desecrating: José Molina opposes the practice of bullfight and its tragic nature, crucial point and essence of Corrida itself.

Two works are realised in black charcoal and represents two different moments of the show: “Toreando” is the moment before the “Ferita”, the apex of the fight.

The other two works are coloured and represent the two possible outcomes of the fight: “The destiny of the bull” and the “Tragedy of the bullfighter”.

If for the bull death is implied and it means to encounter its faith - decided by men and not by nature- for the bullfighter to die is a tragedy.

With this tiny difference of significance, Molina critics a fight that is unfair and unequal, which does not give justice neither to the bull's life, nor to the intelligence of men.

What is Bullfighting

Bullfighting is a very old tradition: we have documents about this kind of show that goes back to the II millennium B.C., when it started to spread in the Ancient Greece.

Bullfighting is a fight either between two bulls, but also between a bull and a man.

This tradistion spread mostly throughout the Meditarranean world and it is still practiced today in Spain as a national event, the Corrida.

José Molina, who is from Madrid, decides to dedicate part of his artistic production to this theme.

His goal is that to report the tradition of his own country, a savage habit in relation to animals, which celebrates death with the sole aim of enjoyment for a tragedy.

Technique used by Molina

They are all drawings realised with pencil on paper.

Two drawings are in black and white, two are in colours; very present in these last two are the tones of yellow, as the ground of the arena, and the red of the blood, which are also the colours of the Spanish flag.

The meaning of this choice made by Molina is fine but clear: Spain tarnishes itself with the blood of its own tradition.

José Molina decides to represent a theme that is thorny with the technique he loves the most, pencil, and chooses to select a style a little be unusual for him, cartoon bubbles.

The cartoon style does not gives back the real agony of Corrida; it softens the feelings, yet getting to the point and arguing against this bloody tradition.
